Is Chewy a Big Hypocrite on This One ?
What's up guys,
Recently I made a video where I went on a long rant about watching short form Jiu-Jitsu technique videos, in contrast to watching long form BJJ videos.
If you missed the first video, use the link below:
ua-cam.com/video/pQhbnS_2yVU/v-deo.html
I was mainly talking about the highly processed, fast edited, high light reel technique videos. But, several of you guys made comments saying that you see those exact types of videos on my own Instagram page.
And you asked, "What gives?"
Am I a hypocrite?
In this video, I'll give you a short and long response to this question, and some of the nuances of making content as a Jiu-Jitsu creator, how it can affect your business, what i'll be doing moving forward, and more.
Thanks for watching.

7 Reason Your Side Control Escapes Suck for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. What's up guys, lots of you guys are having problems with side control escapes, and as a follow-up to my "Why your Guard Retention Sucks" video, I thought we'd add side control escapes for BJJ to the mix. I'll go over a handful of tips that were really useful for me back in the day, and even now as a seasoned BJJ Black Belt, and t...
Effective Strategy for Skill Growth as a BJJ Blue Belt & Beyond

What's up guys, So today we've got a question from an Ultra Heavyweight Jiu-Jitsu competitor by the name of Dan. He's also a Blue Belt who feels very stuck in his Jiu-Jitsu training. He rarely feels threatened by the White Belts but finds himself getting Wrecked by the other Blue Belts & Purple Belts. This is clearly very frustrating for him. He's wondering how he can start to close the gap wit...

What's up guys, Today we've got a question from Aaron, who is getting a little older, 49 years old, and he's had a string of bad luck (ACL Tear, Cancer, COVID, Labral Tear in his Shoulders, etc). He's a 4-stripe brown belt but says he feels like an absolute shell of his former self. He says that when he was a BJJ Purple Belt, he was training a lot more and would decimate this new, 4-stripe brow...
Promoted to BJJ Blue Belt in Less Than 1 Year (And He Hates It!)

Today our question comes from a viewer who got their BJJ Blue Belt in 8 months... Now, for most of you, 8 months is pretty cool... for him, it's not so cool. He sees on the internet that, for most people, a Blue Belt is 1.5-2 years on average, and he feels uneasy about it. He feels like he may not of had enough time to develop and is getting a bit of imposter syndrome. He then competed at Blue ...

What's up guys, Recently I did a video about two BJJ Black Belts who were rolling together and one of them ended up tearing their peck. I gave a few ideas about how you avoid these injuries with proper training, but today I wanted to follow up with Eugine, the Co-Host of the Chewjitsu Podcast who is a Physical Therapist. He knows his stuff, especially for BJJ, as he is also a Black Belt. Since ...
The Worst Type of BJJ Videos to Study (If You Want to Improve)

Today we have a question from Brennan, a self-proclaimed over-scroller on social media. He said that he continues to come across techniques online (specifically short-form content) and sees stuff that he would like to use for his Jiu-Jitsu training. However, even though he saves a bunch of these videos, he said he never uses them. Now he's a Blue Belt and is trying new stuff out on White Belts ...
How to Pull Half Guard in No Gi with Takedowns as a Setup

Today's video comes as a follow up to my "best style of BJJ for big guys with bad takedowns" video a while back. The question comes in from a man by the name of Kelvin. Kelvin says he has a student who is in a similar situation, big guys with no takedowns, and wants to show him how to pull i...

What's up guys, Today's question is whether or not training Jiu-Jitsu makes you worse at grappling? The question comes from an older Blue Belt named Mic, who says he's able to hang with the young guys BUT has found himself in a peculiar situation... He says when young/strong white belts come into the gym they're really tough for him to deal with, forcing him to use his A-game on them & even out...

I think it really comes down to quality and an individuals ability to identify something that can be applied for them. For instance I'll scroll through hundreds of those short form reels and 90%+ will be low percentage flashy techniques that you will never see executed at a high level. However, you have guys out there like Jason Rau who is consistently putting out very informative short form videos that you can actually get a ton of information out of. You just have to be able to focus, pick out the valuable techniques, dedicate the time to understanding them, and actually implement them into your game. Most people will just scroll, watch something one time, and forget all about it by the next time they roll.

44 soon to be 45 yo BB here-- been training since mid teens. . Blessed to have no major injuries or cancer or anything like that, but many small ones. Have the hindsight to see the arc of my physicality. Its different for everyone, but Ive found for myself, and for most of the athletes in MMA and BJJ I grew up watching and still watch, that ~33 is the top of the arc for most people. Small guy here, been ~140-145lbs most of my adult life, was always one of the fastest on the mat and took pride in that. Without having changed much in my lifestyle/training, 37 is when I really took notice that my speed vs early to mid 20s dudes was not what it used to be in jiu-jitsu. Very odd when it you experience it / see it so clearly. At 44 now Im still in similar shape as 37, but a bit heavier (155-160). My static strength is probably as good or better than it ever was, my speed and recovery time still passable, but significantly down from peak. Wind is about the same (pacing). If you want to test yourself, try running a full-on sprint for 50-100 meters or so. I noticed the slowdown/pains in full sprints before I noticed it in anywhere else.

Journaling really helps keep you consistently focused on certain problems each time you train. Without journaling I can’t really think through a problem, identify a solution, and practice applying that until it becomes a part of my game. Journaling allows my mind to flow in a different way than just daydreaming about it

As someone who has trained both, I can say that Japanese jujutsu is more effective for self defence, Also the reason jujutsu doesn’t have ‘live’ training is that a lot of the techniques were for killing or severely injuring your opponent. Don’t get me wrong bjj is great at what it does in terms of focusing on newaza but if you wanted something for self defence I would go Japanese jujutsu

I was up against 3 stripe and 4 stripe blue belts and really felt the skill difference. I took that as motivation for how my skill level should be. It made me look at my own training and try to improve. It also made me sit down with my sifu and many of the coaches and i took a deep dive into jiu-jitsu.

I would say never willingly go to the ground however if it ends on the ground know how to defend and get back up! Learn and know a good stand up art, multiple art as well, western boxing, judo, Japanese Jiu Jitsu , kickboxing etc. Learn how to close the distance, enter , lock up, sweeps, throws, close in elbows, head butts, knees… BJJ is a great art which I have only personally practiced within other mixed styles. personally I do not care for the tournament style where most automatically drop to ground/guard but rather prefer more tactical BJJ. Remember BJJ was birthed from Japanese Jiu Jitsu which includes many throws, licks, arm bars, chokes, joint locks… of course and well trained martial artist fighter should prevail against any non trained fighter. On the street though it is brutal, never know what’s coming from what direction, if weapons are involved, the skill of the attacker etc. I say never ever start an altercation, never underestimate anyone, try defusing issue first, avoid at all cost however if you must defend then flip your switch on and end quickly with as much violence warranted for the situation.

Personally…..knowing what I know. (Not much lol) I happen o be a Brown Belt. IMO no one should be gettin a blue under 18 months. I am training under a very technical Black Belt that emphasizes Technique big time. (We all should) 6 months too soon. There is too much to learn and understand. I get wrestlers are very adept to jujitsu (sometimes) but jujitsu is not something you rush it takes real time and commitment to get to a high level. Too many people rush it. Not enough patience. Excellent advise Chewy

BJJ is like wearing a seat belt. It will save your life if you ever end up catastrophically on the ground. Boxing and Greco-Roman is superior to jujitsu in street situation and both will teach you to deal with stress. As a bouncer I have seen too many BJJ guys receive a bottle to the teeth or a boot to the face attempting an arm-bar or rear naked choke. Don’t ever go to the ground! Your priority is egress. But if you inadvertently do, then jujitsu will come in handy to get you back on your feet and to leave the situation with your life and body mostly intact.
